Moving along

David:

Short intro to long division by way of liquid conversions. Into to prime numbers.  Read a little about the largest prime number discovered as of 2018. Now we're at the Boston Tea Party and the battle of Bunker Hill (there's something of a Star Wars joke about high ground in here).

Jonathan:

Using the number line for addition and subtraction under 20.  Talked about food getting better in the 18th century in Europe, and the appearance of sugar.  Talked about the beak shapes of birds and how different shapes are used for different ways of hunting for food.

Fridays are PE days at the park where they bike and play for hours.  They also watched a PBS Nature episode about living volcanoes and how scientists are trying to understand the biological limits of organisms.

Turtle Hospital

 Today is Turtle Hospital!  They watch how turtles in the Florida Keys get rehabilitated.

practical problems

 David:

 Gave him a few word problems about ordering food, and actually got a little into long division.  Example: 4 burgers costs $10.  1 order fries is $2.  How much is 1 burger plus 1 order of fries?   Real world problems.

Jonathan:

Still working on addition and subtraction above 10, and this time, using the number line.  He's largely reading fine.  Still loves "Living Long Ago."

New year, new goals

David:

3x3 multiplication.  More liquid conversions with ounces and pints.  He's probably going to be mad about the American system being unnecessarily complicated when I eventually introduce metric conversions.  

Jonathan:

Addition and subtraction greater than 10.  One day, he was really angry about the fact that a whale is a mammal and not a fish, because if it swims like a fish, how can it not be a fish?

Winter Break

David

We went to the park a lot.  He's successfully conquered the monkey bars, which was something he could not do before this break.  He's been practicing every time on that type of structure is available at the park, and I believe he's got it.

Jon Jon

We went to the park a lot, mostly to a park where no one goes anyway because it's halfway up a hill, and no one seems to want to park at the bottom and walk up the hill to it.  Jonathan has been practicing climbing the 8 foot vertical wall like those in the rock climbing places.  

They also watched the complete 4-episode mini-series on PBS NOVA about the origins of Eatth.  Neil Degrasse Tyson is great for their age.  

The remaining books from BookShark finally came!  We can now finally synch up the science homework.  I should also check the winners of the annual Ig Nobel Award. 

Week of 12/7 - 12/11

David

Worked on order of operation, mostly as an exercise in being careful and detailed oriented.

Jon Jon

Starting to read pretty well.  Went to the Huntington Gardens and he can reading a sign at the entrance of the desert garden.  The only words he could not read were 3+ syllables.
